Behind the Exclusive Partnership on Google Pixel
The exclusive partnership between Google and Verizon Communications for the commercialization of Google Pixel in the US has been the root of confusion among many consumers recently. However, it is important to note that while Verizon Communications is the only wireless carrier that can commercialize the device, Google Pixel is not limited to Verizon Communications alone.
Consumers who wish to subscribe to other networks using Google Pixel can purchase the device directly from Google. After all, the California-based company is already offering financing plans for its devices. On top of that, Google also offers a $100 two-year device protection plan similar to that of Verizon Communications.
Security and System Updates
In terms of minor and major updates, Google will be responsible for the monthly security updates on all Google Pixel units regardless of where they had been acquired from. Meanwhile, system updates on Google Pixel devices purchased from Verizon Communications will be provided by the wireless carrier while updates on those purchased from Google will be provided by the technology giant. Nonetheless, Google will still develop the system updates.
“Monthly security updates will come from Google (for all models), and system updates will be managed by Verizon for Verizon models, and Google for unlocked models bought from Google Store,” clarified a Google spokesperson.
The downside of this approach is that system updates on devices bought from Verizon Communications might arrive later than expected.
Since there is pretty much no advantage in getting Google Pixel from Verizon Communications now unless one is an existing subscriber to the wireless carrier, it is highly recommended for consumers to purchase the device directly from Google.
Google Pixel devices will officially roll out on October 20.
On Thursday, Alphabet has closed at $803.08 and Verizon Communications at $50.26.
