Holly Holm, former women’s UFC bantamweight champion, is slated to headline UFC Fight Night: Singapore on June 17 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The 35-year-old former champion will return to the bantamweight division to face Bethe Correia.
Holm will face Correia in June. The event will feature two other former UFC champions.
Holm famously knocked out Ronda Rousey with a head kick at the UFC 193 in Melbourne two years ago. She failed to win the UFC featherweight title and is now returning to the bantamweight division.
After her victory against Rousey, Holm has lost three matches. She failed to defend her title against Miesha Tate in March in the UFC 193. She then lost to Valentina Shevchenko in a unanimous decision four months later at another UFC event.
Holm entered the featherweight division after bulking up in hopes of winning the women’s title, but lost to the Germaine de Randamie at the UFC 208.
Bethe Correia, Holm’s opponent in the upcoming event, fell to Ronda Rousey in 2015.
The Singapore event marks the UFC’s return to Asia after taking at 19-month hiatus. Thus far, the UFC’s efforts to expand its foothold in Asia, the birthplace of martial arts, has generated mixed results. ONE Championship still holds the majority of the market in Asia.
ONE Championship claims 90% of the market share in the region, and has hosted over 50 shows in 13 cities all across Asia.
The UFC Fight Night event is likely the MMA promoter’s attempt to compete with ONE’s event: Dynasty of Heroes. The main event will feature champion Angela Lee taking on Istela Nunes De Souza.
Lee, born in Canada, is a favorite in Singapore due to her Singaporean heritage.
More fights in the UFC Fight Nite: Singapore are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
