What We Know About Avatar 2 So Far: Release Date Pushed Back, More Sequels To Follow!

February 22, 2015 - By Jan Rainey

The hype for Avatar 2 has slowly begun to trickle out, with new postings on the official Avatar social media accounts. While James Cameron and company have kept relatively quiet about the plot and other details, here’s what we know so far about the sequel to the highest grossing film of all time!

Delayed Release Date

For those expecting Avatar 2 to be released in December 2016, unfortunately it was recently confirmed by James Cameron himself that they’ve had to push the premiere back to 2017. It will open on December 25th, Christmas day.

Multiple Sequels In The Works

One of the reasons for the delay is that Cameron is working on multiple sequels all at once, with filming and production being fairly disjointed. Tentatively Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 are slated for 2018 and 2019 release dates, closing out the trilogy a decade after the first movie was released. There is not expected to be any more films after the fourth, but stranger things have happened in the film industry. There could always be some future spin offs.

The Story Continues

There will be no bizarre prequels or reboots with Avatar 2. The key characters will be returning to continue the story from the first film.

Reprising their roles are Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, and Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch.

Despite Grace Augustine dying in the first film, it has now been confirmed that Sigourney Weaver will be returning in a new role. There’s a lot of speculation about what that might be (is she an Avatar, did she really survive? etc), but so far nothing concrete has been revealed.

Strong Social Media Campaign

There is currently a strong social media campaign to get the public excited about Avatar 2, with production photos and interactive contests finding themselves on Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Pintrest. Special Na’vi badges are being awarded to people for interacting with the @officialavatar Twitter account, and some of the sounds from the movie are being shared on Sound Cloud.
